Ok, menjelang jam2 terakhir sebelum tahun 2019 menjelma.. seperti dijanjikan kami akan sediakan beberapa pilihan terbaek dari editor2 Dissecting the Euphony (DtE). Ini adalah beberapa pilihan kami dan mungkin ada yang terlepas pandang, kami mohon maaf.. dan terima kasih juga kerana mengikuti penulisan kami yang bermula pada 2010.. ok go!

2018 ni meriah jugak releases nya.. tak kira local atau international.. malah ada juga yang ter”mis” beli, terlepas pandang dan yang mungkin awal tahun 2019 baru nak tau pasal release yang bagus (macam tahun 2016, gua terlepas pandang release dari Batushka).. hahaha.. Ok, banyak jugak isi walet yang habis seperti tahun2 terdahulu kerana gua masih percaya kepada fizikal copy..haha.. ok, dibawah gua sertakan beberapa release yang sempat hinggap di telinga gua dan menjadi playlist yang blom lagi terhenti sehingga sekarang.. ok cekidaut…

Antara release awal tahun yang agak memeranjatkan gua. Walaupun music bawaan Frugal bukanlah “makanan harian” Mat Metal macam gua, tetapi mendengar keseluruhan tracks dari album ini membuatkan gua rasa sedikit “segar” dengan apa yang mereka hasilkan. Berada dalam lingkungan Alternative Rock sehingga Grunge dan melangkau ke Heavy Metal, pada gua Frugal ada citarasa trademark tersendiri dalam penghasilan karya2 mereka. Terima kasih kepada Bob Agigi yang menjual CD ini. Hahaha..

Full length pertama dari Exothermix ini wajar dijadikan antara album terbaek tempatan untuk 2018. Atas keberanian dan kesungguhan yang dapat dilihat dalam penghasilan karya2 didalam album ini jelas ianya perlu untuk dijadikan pemangkin kepada karya2 music keras bawah tanah negara. Selain itu ia juga patut dijadikan saingan kepada band2 keras tempatan untuk lebih berusaha menghasilkan produk yang bersungguh2 seperti apa yang dilakukan Exothermix. kekuatan album ini jelas pada permainan instruments dan penyampaian setiap track yang dihasilkan. Exothermix ada ramuan dan mereka berpegang kepada konsep dan trademark Thrash Metal mereka walaupun pengaruh2 genre sebegini bersepah-sepah dikiri kanan depan belakang mereka. Satu produk terbaek untuk genre khususnya Thrash Metal yang mampu membuatkan anda tidak sedar kepala anda bergerak2 mengikut tempo lagu yang didengar. Rancak!!!

Greece Metal punya trademark tersendiri. Varathron adalah antara nama2 besar selain Rotting Christ dan Thou Art Lou. Patriarchs of Evil gua anggap sebagai release terkini dari Varathron yang boleh mengimbau zaman awal 90an dikala Greece Metal banyak mempengaruhi kewujudan band2 Metal tanahair. Kekuatan album ini pada gua adalah pada “feel” keseluruhan apabila dimainkan dari awal track hingga akhir. Banyak juga gua baca beberapa Mat Metal tanahair yang berbicara berkenaan album ini.

Prequelle adalah suatu “umpan” yang sangat menjadi dari Ghost. Ini adalah album yang mudah “melekat” dan mudah dihadam. Ia juga agak catchy dan kesimpulan yang boleh gua katakan Prequelle adalah sebuah album yang paling best walaupun ianya agak “nakal” dari segi liriknya. Jika sebelum ini Ghost dilabel sebagai ABBA zaman modern, kini Ghost benar2 menangkis sebarang penafian yang tidak mempercayai mereka sememangnya ABBA versi modern. Percubaan paling menjadi dan berjaya dari Ghost kali ini.

Ianya tidak lah sepertimana anda mendengar Cacophony atau album2 solo beliau ketika gitar berada dibawah telunjuk beliau. namun Triumphant Hearts (2018) terlalu istimewa walaupun setiap inci note yang dimainkan adalah dari rakan2 sessionist/musician. Idea yang terhimpun sekian lama sehingga terkini adalah dari kemampuan beliau yang sangat terbatas. Latar yang cukup syahdu dan penuh jiwa. Ini ditambah dengan sumbangan solo gitar serta vocal dari rakan2 artis yang bersama-sama menjayakan impian beliau. Joe Satriani, Uli Jon Roth, Steve Morse, Marty Friedman, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert dan ramai lagi bersama2 mewarnakan album ini sehabis boleh. Triumphant Hearts adalah satu kemestian!
A Perfect Circle – Disillusioned (Official Music Video)
Disillusioned dari A Perfect Circle adalah video music terbaek pilihan gua untuk 2018 walaupun So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish adalah track kegilaan gua (turut disertakan video music) tetapi Disillusioned lebih “memeningkan” dan “gila” jika dibandingkan dengan ratusan music video yang gua tengok sepanjang tahun ini. Behemoth, Tools dan A Perfect Circle sememangnya punya pemikiran yang agak lari dari pemikiran manusia2 normal. I Like!!!

Ok, 5 buah releases terbaek pada gua dan music video yang gua suka.. seperkara menarik untuk 2018 juga menampakkan kemeriahan scene dengan beberapa label tempatan yang bersungguh seperti Legion Music, Goatlordth/Glord Records yang kerap mengeluarkan produk2 yang terkini dan penganjuran gig bertahap memuaskan. Ya.. acara gig nampak meriah dengan penyertaan band2 dari luar negara seperti UADA, Hellwitch dan berbagai lagi.. Ok, sebagai penutup jumpa tahun depan (2019) di gig Varathron.

Damn, 2018 really went in a blink of eye. So what have I learnt? Not much, really. I have become less interested in Metal music for this year for many reasons. First, Mechina decided not to release any new albums except compendiums of older releases, pffft. Second, I tend to play previous years releases instead of looking for new one. Case in point:
Check out the proof and yes that’s Nabila Razali and Elizabeth Tan in my top played songs. And lastly, I’m tired. But please feel free to have a look of other stuff that caught my attention in 2018.
Liholesie – Fables
Russian Ethno-Ambient solo act Liholesie released Fables in April 2018. This 3 song EP evokes the appreciation of nature and transport listeners to somewhere far, far away from present. The songs are beautifully crafted with folk instruments and electronics subtly weave in between. I imagine this is Russian’s answer to Kitaro. My only complaint is I can’t get by with just 3 songs.
Descent – Towers of Grandiosity
All it took to impress me was their HM-2 Death Metal tone. And they fucking killed it. It might not be for everyone but is sure left an everlasting impression, especially for those who crave that Sunlight Studio sound dialed up to 11, the Aussie way! End your 2018 right by cranking volume knob to the max and blast Towers of Grandiosity all day. Fuck yes.
Ennui – The End of Circle
How’s your 2018 went? If yours fucked up as much as mine, let Ennui’s The End of Circle be the soundtrack of your life. There’s a lingering pessimistic aura that hold you from going forward or even having a glint of hope, because you know… we’re all gonna die anyway. I’m pretty drowned in the bleak atmosphere of the album which made me pay no heed to the draggy duration of the album. I mean, I’m sad. That’s all that matters. This is my catharsis, mmkay?
Sondrous – Something Like Serenity
This South African Post-Rock duo sounds really ambitious (but then, name me one Post-Rock band that doesn’t?) in the broadest sense. It gives me lots of feeling (uplifting, hopeful, y’know just any Post-Rock bands) and then the sense of wonderment and fear of the unknown. Yeah, that’s right. It has a spacey atmospheric feels stretching throughout its 40 mins duration bringing you on emotional roller-coaster ride. It’s beautiful and emotional soaring. Check out the last track, it concludes very well.
Harakiri for the Sky – Arson
To be honest, I like Arson. It’s a decent album to enjoy. Tracks like You are the Scars, Tomb Omnia and Manifesto (Graveyard Lovers cover) are enjoyable. However, the album seems to not stretch into new territory. It’s like Aokigahara with better and polished production. Nothing wrong with staying the same but shit will get old fast. But still, first time listeners will love Arson and hopefully will discover their older releases eventually. A play it safe album, but still enjoyable!
Myrkur – Juniper
The controversial figure within Black Metal scene. Is she just capitalizing on Black Metal trvekvlt aesthetics? What’s up with her leaning towards folk music lately? Was she really a model? I don’t think she needs to prove anything. To be honest, I despise her Ulver influenced Black Metal from early releases (intentional raw and ugly sound) but Juniper EP caught my attention with its folk music approach and she seems to make full use of her beautiful singing voice. Yeah, I rather not listen to her shrieks. With just 2 songs, the EP clocks under 7 minutes and seems to serve as continuation from Mareridt but with more chill yet subtle sinister Myrkur touch. Or rather, another Ulver influenced approach? I don’t know.

KATIE – Remember
I discovered Katie purely by accident. I’m on Spotify free and naturally, ads will pop in every half and hour or so. There was this time her single promo kept playing and it got me annoyed with the heavily processed ‘oh oh oh oh oh oh’ chorus. I decided to check out her MV and oh… A E S T H E T I C. Until this day, I’m still gawking at the treatment. It’s sexy (non-sexual tbh), edgy and pleasing. But on a serious note, it’s a catchy, beautifully written track. She could do away even without the MV. Oh yeah, I didn’t expect she’s a Korean from the singing.
